A prospect spends time describing a project, presses Send and sees “Something went wrong”. The message disappears, the page scrolls away or the form clears. Even an attractive website becomes difficult to use at that moment.

A useful enquiry form helps visitors correct mistakes and understand whether their request was accepted. For a UAE business receiving international phone numbers and mixed Arabic and English enquiries, test the recovery journey as carefully as the successful submission.

Separate an input problem from a delivery problem

“Enter your email address” describes something the visitor can fix. “We could not confirm receipt” describes an uncertain submission outcome. They need different instructions. Do not tell someone to change valid details because the server is temporarily unavailable, or display a success message merely because they pressed the button.

Create an agreed message for missing required information, an unsupported format, a rejected request and a network interruption. Keep wording specific enough to help without exposing internal logs or security controls.

Make each correction easy to find

The W3C WAI notification tutorial recommends clear feedback near fields and an overall error list that identifies the affected controls and helps users reach them. A red outline alone leaves people guessing, especially when they cannot distinguish the colour.

For a quote form, “Choose a country code and enter your mobile number” is more useful than “Invalid input”. Connect the explanation to the field programmatically, keep the label visible and use a deliberate keyboard-focus or announcement strategy. A dynamic message should be discoverable with assistive technology without repeatedly interrupting every keystroke.

ITZ’s website development service can review the form’s recovery states alongside delivery handling. Review Your Form Error Recovery with the affected page and a description of what the visitor sees.

Keep valid work when a submission fails

Retain the visitor’s message and other appropriate entries while they correct an error or retry after an unconfirmed response. Clearing a long project description makes the visitor repeat work. Clear fields only after the application has the evidence required for its stated success message.

Preservation does not mean storing enquiry content indefinitely in browser storage. Decide whether values remain only in the current page, whether drafts are needed and how sensitive fields should behave. Avoid putting personal information in URL query strings, analytics events or debug logs.

Accept reasonable formats, validate on the server

W3C’s validation guidance distinguishes helpful browser validation from the server checks needed because client-side checks can be bypassed. It also encourages accommodating reasonable input formats. A telephone field should not reject a visitor solely for using familiar spacing.

For a country-code selector, test that the complete international number reaches the submission payload once, without duplicated prefixes. Verify the selected service and source-page context too. These checks complement the broader enquiry form usability guide; they do not prove that an email reached an inbox.

Use a six-case release check

  1. Submit with a required field empty and confirm that its label and correction are understandable.
  2. Enter a malformed email address, fix it and ensure other valid entries remain.
  3. Navigate and correct the form using only the keyboard, then repeat with a representative screen reader.
  4. Test on a narrow phone screen with the onscreen keyboard open and page zoom increased.
  5. Simulate server rejection and a network timeout in a test environment; confirm the page retains entries and avoids a false success claim.
  6. Verify confirmed acceptance and any alternative contact route separately, using an authorised test process.

A timeout can leave receipt uncertain. Explain that uncertainty and offer an appropriate secondary route without claiming that opening WhatsApp sends a message. Include the recovery checks in the website launch checklist and repeat them after form-provider or validation changes.

Review Your Form Error Recovery

Share the page address, the failing step and an anonymised example of the error. ITZ can discuss accessible corrections, retained entries, submission evidence and mobile behaviour. Review Your Form Error Recovery through this article’s enquiry form.
